Day 1 Mikumi National Park The Little Serengeti Day Safari

Mkata Floodplain Game Drives, Lions on Termite Mounds, Picnic Lunch & Hippo Pool Tour

Mikumi Day Safari

Your safari adventure begins with an early morning pick up from your accommodation in Dar es Salaam. Meet your BMC TOURS & SAFARIS guide and embark on the scenic drive through coastal landscapes and rural villages towards the southern highlands.

Upon arrival at Mikumi National Park, the landscape opens dramatically into the Mkata Floodplain the park's centerpiece and heart of all wildlife activity. Often called the "Little Serengeti," these endless grasslands stretch toward the blue silhouette of the Udzungwa Mountains, creating a photographer's paradise.

Your game drive begins immediately, traversing the floodplain's network of well maintained roads. Keep your camera ready for elephants moving in family groups, giraffes browsing acacia treetops, and herds of zebras and wildebeest dotting the plains. The open terrain makes wildlife spotting remarkably accessible.

One of Mikumi's signature sights is lions resting atop massive termite mounds, surveying their kingdom with regal indifference. Your experienced guide knows the best locations to find these predators, as well as the park's resident leopards, though these remain more elusive. Buffalo herds gather near water sources, while impalas and warthogs are never far from view.

As midday approaches, pause for a delicious picnic lunch at a designated site within the park. Enjoy your meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of the African bush, perhaps overlooking a watering hole where animals come to drink.

After lunch, continue your exploration toward the Hippo Pool, where families of hippos wallow in muddy water, grunting and splashing in contented colonies. Crocodiles bask motionless on nearby banks, ancient eyes watching for opportunity. The pool area also attracts elephants, buffalo, and countless bird species from colorful bee eaters to majestic fish eagles.

Mikumi offers unique chances to spot the world's largest antelope the eland often seen in small herds on the floodplain. For keen observers, sable and greater kudu may appear in wooded areas, while over 400 bird species provide endless fascination for birdwatchers.

As the afternoon sun softens to gold, enjoy final wildlife encounters before beginning your journey back. The changing light transforms the floodplain into a painter's palette of warm hues. Relax on the scenic drive back to Dar es Salaam, your heart full of new memories of lions on termite mounds, elephants in golden grass, and the timeless beauty of Mikumi's Little Serengeti.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mikumi National Park is about 290 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, taking approximately 5 to 6 hours of driving along a paved highway.

You can commonly spot lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, impalas, baboons, crocodiles, and hippos.
Yes, because the Mkata Floodplain has open views and well-mapped roads, a single day safari offers ample opportunity to spot the park's main wildlife.
The picnic lunch includes a delicious meal box with items like chicken, sandwiches, boiled egg, juice, fruit, and snacks, eaten at a safe, designated picnic site.
Wildlife viewing is excellent year-round, but the dry season (June to October) is ideal as animals congregate around waterholes and vegetation is thinner.
