Day-by-Day

Full Trekking Itinerary

DAY 1 Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

Metrics: 5–6 hrs | 11 km | 1,800 m → 3,000 m

Machame Gate registration and rainforest climb start

After breakfast, you depart Moshi for Machame Gate where registration formalities are completed before beginning your climb. The trail ascends gradually through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, colorful birdlife, and playful colobus monkeys. The path can be muddy and humid, especially during the rainy season, but the rich vegetation creates a beautiful introduction to Kilimanjaro. Your guide will explain the mountain’s ecology and wildlife as you gain altitude steadily through the forest. By late afternoon, you arrive at Machame Camp where the mountain crew has prepared camp. Enjoy a hot meal, relax, and prepare for the days ahead while surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp
DAY 2 Machame Camp – Shira Camp

Metrics: 5–6 hrs | 5 km | 3,000 m → 3,840 m

Moorland ridge climb to Shira Plateau

Today's trek leaves the rainforest behind and enters the heather and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you climb rocky ridges and open landscapes with spectacular views of Mount Meru and the plains below. Giant heather, volcanic rock formations, and dramatic scenery dominate the route as you make your way toward the Shira Plateau. Upon reaching the plateau, panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding wilderness unfold before you. The afternoon provides time for rest and acclimatization while enjoying one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful camping locations. As the sun sets, the mountain reveals stunning colors across the expansive plateau.

Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp
DAY 3 Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Metrics: 7–8 hrs | 11 km | 3,840 m → 4,600 m → 3,950 m

Lava Tower high altitude acclimatization to Barranco Valley

This important acclimatization day follows the principle of “climb high, sleep low.” After breakfast, you traverse the high altitude moorlands toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” The ascent to over 4,600 meters challenges your body to adapt to thinner air while providing spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s rugged alpine desert environment. After lunch near Lava Tower, the route descends into the beautiful Barranco Valley through landscapes filled with giant senecios and unique mountain vegetation. Arriving at Barranco Camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, you'll enjoy one of the most scenic campsites on the mountain while benefiting from valuable acclimatization.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
DAY 4 Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 5.5 km | 3,950 m → 3,995 m

Barranco Wall scramble toward Karanga Camp

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route. Although steep in places, the climb is non technical and rewards you with spectacular views over the valleys below. After reaching the top, the trail traverses ridges and valleys beneath the southern glaciers of Kibo Peak. You pass beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers while enjoying incredible views of the summit. The relatively short trekking day is designed to support acclimatization and conserve energy for higher elevations. Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, there may be an opportunity for a short acclimatization hike before returning to camp for dinner and rest.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
DAY 5 Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 4 km | 3,995 m → 4,640 m

Ascent through alpine desert to Barafu base camp

After breakfast, you continue your ascent toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before summit day. The route follows barren alpine desert terrain characterized by rocky slopes, loose scree, and dramatic mountain scenery. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the harsh high altitude environment near the summit. Although the distance is relatively short, the elevation gain and thinner air make the trek more demanding. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, lunch is served and the remainder of the day is dedicated to resting, hydrating, and preparing for the summit attempt. An early dinner allows time for sleep before the midnight wake up call for the final ascent.

Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp
DAY 6 Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp (Summit Day)

Metrics: 12–15 hrs | 13 km | 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,820 m

Uhuru Peak 5,895m summit victory and descent to Millennium Camp

Shortly after midnight, you begin the most challenging and rewarding stage of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Guided by headlamps under a star filled sky, you ascend steep scree slopes toward Stella Point on the crater rim. As dawn breaks, breathtaking views of glaciers, ice cliffs, and Mawenzi Peak emerge around you. After reaching Stella Point, a final push brings you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Celebrate your achievement with photographs and unforgettable panoramic views before beginning the descent. After returning to Barafu Camp for breakfast and a brief rest, continue down through alpine desert into the lower mountain zones. Arrive at Millennium Camp in the afternoon for a well deserved overnight stay.

Dinner and overnight at Millennium Camp
DAY 7 Millennium Camp – Mweka Gate

Metrics: 5–6 hrs | 12 km | 3,820 m → 1,640 m

Rainforest descent to Mweka Gate for certificates

After breakfast, begin the final descent through lush montane rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail is gentle and scenic, providing a relaxing conclusion to your mountain adventure. As you descend, temperatures become warmer and the air noticeably richer in oxygen. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, park formalities are completed and summit certificates are awarded to commemorate your achievement. Celebrate with your guides and mountain crew before boarding your transfer vehicle back to Moshi or Arusha. This marks the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro journey and an unforgettable experience on the Roof of Africa.
