Tour Description

The 6-Day Marangu Route is one of the most comfortable and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the "Coca-Cola Route," it is the only route featuring mountain hut accommodation throughout the trek, making it ideal for first-time climbers and those seeking extra comfort. The additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut improves summit success rates while allowing your body to adjust to higher elevations. Trek through lush rainforest, scenic moorlands, alpine desert landscapes, and finally reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, before descending through Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecological zones.

Full Trekking Itinerary

DAY 1 Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Metrics: 5–7 hrs | 8 km | 1,870 m → 2,700 m

Marangu Gate registration and rainforest climb start

After breakfast, you drive to Marangu Gate where registration and permit formalities are completed before beginning your Kilimanjaro adventure. The trail passes through lush rainforest filled with towering trees, colorful birdlife, and occasional monkey sightings. The gradual ascent allows you to settle into the trek while enjoying the beauty of Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. Upon arrival at Mandara Hut, you can relax, enjoy the mountain atmosphere, and prepare for the days ahead. The comfortable hut accommodation offers a pleasant first night on the mountain.

DAY 2 Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Metrics: 6–8 hrs | 11.5 km | 2,700 m → 3,720 m

Moorland ridge trek to Horombo Hut with views of Kibo and Mawenzi

Leaving the rainforest behind, today’s trek takes you into the heath and moorland zone where giant lobelias and unique alpine vegetation dominate the landscape. Along the route, clear weather provides impressive views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. A visit to Maundi Crater offers excellent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and mountain slopes. The trail steadily gains altitude before reaching Horombo Hut, where you can relax and enjoy spectacular mountain scenery. This camp serves as an important stop for acclimatization and summit preparation.

DAY 3 Horombo Hut Acclimatization Day

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 5 km | 3,720 m → 4,000 m → 3,720 m

Mawenzi Ridge acclimatization walk and return to Horombo Hut

Today is dedicated to acclimatization, a key factor in improving your chances of reaching the summit successfully. After breakfast, you hike toward Mawenzi Ridge, gaining additional altitude before returning to Horombo Hut. The trek provides stunning views of Mawenzi Peak, Kibo, and the surrounding alpine landscape. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps your body adapt to the thinner air while reducing the risk of altitude sickness. The remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and enjoying the peaceful mountain environment.

DAY 4 Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

Metrics: 5–6 hrs | 10 km | 3,720 m → 4,700 m

Crossing the alpine desert Saddle to Kibo Hut base

After breakfast, you continue across the vast alpine desert known as the Saddle, located between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain becomes increasingly barren and dramatic, creating a unique lunar-like landscape. Although the trail is gradual, the higher altitude makes the trek more demanding. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, lunch is served before a period of rest and preparation. Your guides provide a detailed summit briefing and ensure all equipment is ready. An early dinner is followed by several hours of sleep before the midnight summit attempt.
