Today you leave the dense rainforest behind and enter the open moorland and heather zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail steadily climbs over rolling hills, volcanic rock formations, and wide valleys, offering increasingly dramatic views of the mountain landscape. As you gain altitude, the air becomes cooler and thinner, marking a clear transition into higher alpine terrain. Along the way, you may enjoy your first clear views of Kibo Peak rising above the clouds, a motivating highlight of the day. The hike is steady and scenic, allowing gradual acclimatization. Upon arrival at Shira 1 Camp, your crew sets up camp while you rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next stage of your ascent.

You ascend steadily toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation used for altitude acclimatization, where you pause for lunch and adaptation. The terrain becomes increasingly rugged, exposed, and alpine desert-like, with cooler temperatures and stronger winds. After spending time at higher altitude, you descend into the remote Moir Hut valley beneath Lent Hills. This quiet campsite offers a sense of isolation and spectacular wilderness views. The quiet route ensures a peaceful hiking experience away from busier trails. As you progress, the altitude remains high but manageable, supporting continued acclimatization. The gradual descent supports acclimatization while guiding you further around the mountain toward the eastern side. With fewer trekkers on this route, the silence and openness of the landscape create a deeply reflective journey. You arrive at Third Cave Camp in the afternoon, where you rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night in a calm natural setting surrounded by high-altitude wilderness.

Ascend volcanic Saddle to School Hut high summit camp

Today you climb steadily into the barren, lunar-like saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Although the distance is short, the altitude gain makes this a demanding ascent requiring slow pacing and steady breathing. The surrounding views are dramatic, with volcanic slopes stretching endlessly in all directions. You arrive at School Hut by early afternoon, where you rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally and physically for the midnight summit attempt after an early dinner and detailed briefing.
