Starting from the western Lemosho approach, the trail circles nearly the entire mountain before the summit push to Uhuru Peak. Trekkers experience diverse ecosystems including rainforest, moorlands, alpine desert, and glacial summit zones. With very low traffic on the northern slopes, this route provides a true wilderness experience and one of the highest summit success rates on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Londorossi Gate registration and rainforest hike to Big Tree Camp

After breakfast, you drive to Londorossi Gate for registration before continuing to the Lemosho trailhead where your trek begins. The route passes through lush rainforest filled with ancient trees, birds, and possible wildlife sightings such as colobus monkeys. The trail is gentle but steadily ascending, offering a beautiful introduction to Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. The forest is humid and vibrant, with moss-covered trees and rich biodiversity. You arrive at Big Tree Camp in the afternoon where your tents are set up and meals prepared. Evening briefing prepares you for the next stage of ascent.

Dinner and overnight at Big Tree Camp
DAY 3 Big Tree Camp – Shira 1 Camp

Metrics: 5–6 hrs | 8 km | 2,800 m → 3,550 m

Ascend through moorland zone toward Shira 1 Camp

Today you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and wide-open views dominate the landscape. The climb is steady and increasingly scenic as Kibo Peak becomes visible ahead. The air grows thinner and cooler as you gain altitude. You traverse rolling hills and open valleys, enjoying dramatic mountain scenery throughout the day. This is an important acclimatization stage as your body adjusts to higher elevation. You arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon, surrounded by vast wilderness and sweeping views of the Shira Plateau.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 1 Camp
DAY 4 Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 6 km | 3,550 m → 3,850 m

Acclimatization traverse across Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp

A short acclimatization trek across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The terrain is open moorland with spectacular views of Kibo Volcano and surrounding volcanic formations. Optional acclimatization hike toward Shira Cathedral offers panoramic scenery and improved altitude adaptation. The pace is relaxed and steady, allowing your body to adjust comfortably. Wildlife is rare but the landscape is dramatic and peaceful. You arrive at Shira 2 Camp by early afternoon for rest, hydration, and preparation for higher altitude trekking in the coming days.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp
DAY 5 Shira 2 Camp – Moir Hut via Lava Tower

Metrics: 6–7 hrs | 10 km | 3,850 m → 4,600 m → 4,200 m

Lava Tower altitude acclimatization and descent to Moir Hut

You ascend gradually into alpine desert terrain toward Lava Tower, a massive volcanic formation used for acclimatization. The climb is challenging with rocky slopes, thin air, and cooler temperatures. After lunch at high altitude, you descend into the remote Moir Valley beneath Lent Hills. This quiet campsite offers incredible isolation and panoramic views across the mountain. Optional afternoon walks provide additional acclimatization and scenic viewpoints stretching toward the Kenyan plains. The combination of ascent and descent makes this a key acclimatization day for summit preparation.

Dinner and overnight at Moir Hut
DAY 6 Moir Hut – Buffalo / Pofu Camp

Metrics: 5–7 hrs | 12 km | 4,200 m → 4,020 m

Traverse northern slopes to Buffalo / Pofu Camp with Kenya views

Today’s trek continues through the remote northern circuit across vast alpine desert landscapes with minimal vegetation. The route is quiet and offers a true wilderness experience with uninterrupted views of the mountain and surrounding plains. Gentle ascents and descents guide you around Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. The air remains thin but manageable as acclimatization continues. The scenery is wide, open, and dramatic throughout the day. You arrive at Buffalo or Pofu Camp in the afternoon for rest, hydration, and preparation for higher elevations ahead.

Dinner and overnight at Buffalo / Pofu Camp
DAY 7 Buffalo Camp – Third Cave Camp

Metrics: 5–7 hrs | 12 km | 4,020 m → 3,870 m

Quiet wilderness walk along northern circuit to Third Cave Camp

You continue along the quiet northern circuit through ridges, valleys, and expansive alpine desert terrain. The landscape is remote, peaceful, and untouched, offering one of the most scenic trekking environments on Kilimanjaro. The gradual descent supports acclimatization while moving you toward the eastern side of the mountain. With fewer trekkers on this route, the experience feels deeply immersive in nature. Wildlife sightings are rare but the silence and vastness are unforgettable. You arrive at Third Cave Camp in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay.

Dinner and overnight at Third Cave Camp
DAY 8 Third Cave Camp – School Hut

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 5 km | 3,870 m → 4,750 m

Ascend volcanic Saddle to School Hut summit high camp

A steady ascent takes you into the barren saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The terrain becomes rocky, exposed, and lunar-like as altitude increases significantly. Though the distance is short, the climb is demanding due to thin air and elevation gain. The views are vast and dramatic across volcanic landscapes. You move slowly and steadily, focusing on breathing and rhythm. You arrive at School Hut in the early afternoon, where you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt after an early dinner and briefing from your guide.

Dinner and overnight at School Hut
DAY 9 School Hut – Uhuru Peak – Millennium Camp

Around midnight, you begin your final summit ascent under freezing conditions using headlamps. The climb is slow and mentally demanding as you reach Gilman’s Point at sunrise, followed by Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The summit offers breathtaking glacier and crater views with an unforgettable sense of achievement. After celebration and photos, you descend via Kibo Hut and continue down to Millennium Camp for recovery after the most challenging day of the expedition.
