This 6-day Kilimanjaro adventure follows the scenic Rongai Route, the only trail approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side. The climb offers a quieter, gradual ascent through forest, moorland, and alpine desert zones before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The descent follows the Marangu Route, passing Mandara and Horombo huts. This itinerary is ideal for trekkers seeking a less crowded route with high summit success rates, combining diverse landscapes, unique wildlife sightings, and professional guiding services throughout the journey to Africa’s highest point.
After breakfast in Moshi, you are transferred to Rongai Gate for registration and start your trek through cultivated farmland and a quiet forest zone. The trail is gentle and scenic, offering a peaceful start compared to other routes. You may spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various bird species as you ascend gradually. The forest thins out as you approach Simba Camp, located at the edge of the moorland zone with wide views toward the Kenyan plains. This is your first night on the mountain, allowing your body to begin altitude adaptation.
Dinner and overnight at Simba Camp
Today’s trek is a steady ascent into the moorland zone with increasingly dramatic scenery. The path leads to Second Cave, where you enjoy excellent views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields. After lunch, you continue across open moorland toward the Kikelewa area near Mawenzi’s rugged peaks. The landscape becomes more arid and expansive, offering a true sense of wilderness. You arrive at your campsite in the late afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay. This stage improves acclimatization while introducing higher altitude terrain.

A shorter but steeper climb leads you into alpine terrain with breathtaking views. Vegetation quickly disappears as you ascend rocky slopes toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp. The camp is spectacularly located beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak, creating one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro. The afternoon is free for rest or short acclimatization walks around the area. This stop is crucial for adapting to altitude before crossing the Saddle. The environment is quiet, remote, and highly rewarding for photography and relaxation.

Today you cross the famous “Saddle,” a vast lunar-like desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is open, dry, and surreal, with minimal vegetation and wide volcanic views. The trek is steady but demanding due to altitude and exposure. You arrive at School Hut (Kibo area), your final base before summit night. After arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare gear for the midnight ascent. Early dinner is served, and the evening is spent resting as climbers mentally prepare for the most challenging part of the climb.

Around 1:00 a.m., you begin the final ascent under torchlight, climbing slowly through steep volcanic scree. After several hours, you reach Gilman’s Point and continue (for strong climbers) to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Sunrise over Mawenzi and glaciers creates an unforgettable moment. After celebration, you descend rapidly to Kibo Hut for rest and continue further down to Horombo Hut for overnight stay. This is the most physically demanding and rewarding day of the trek, combining endurance, emotion, and achievement.
Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut
After breakfast, you begin a steady descent through moorland and rainforest zones toward Mandara Hut. The air becomes richer in oxygen as you descend, and the vegetation becomes lush again. From Mandara, you continue to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi for a hot shower and well-deserved rest. This final day concludes your Kilimanjaro journey with a strong sense of accomplishment and unforgettable mountain memories.
