This 7-day Kilimanjaro adventure follows the Rongai Route, the only trail approaching the mountain from the northern side. Known as the driest and most remote route, it offers a gradual ascent through forest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The descent follows the Marangu Route through Horombo and Mandara huts. Ideal for trekkers seeking a quieter experience with high summit success rates, this journey combines scenic wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and professional guiding for a safe and rewarding climb to Africa’s highest point.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport where you are welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. After settling in, you meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing covering the full trekking route, safety procedures, and equipment inspection. This ensures you are fully prepared for the climb ahead. The rest of the day is for relaxation and final preparation. Moshi provides a calm atmosphere at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering your first view of the mountain on clear days.
Dinner and overnight at The Maridadi Hotel
After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration before continuing to Rongai trailhead. The trek begins through farmland and pine forest, offering a gentle and gradual ascent. Wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various birds may be seen along the way. The trail is peaceful and less crowded compared to southern routes. After a lunch break on the trail, you arrive at First Caves Camp where your tents are already set up by the crew. The evening is spent resting and preparing for higher elevations ahead.
Dinner and overnight at First Caves Camp
Today’s trek continues steadily into the moorland zone. You pass Second Cave at 3,450m, a scenic stop for rest and lunch with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The terrain becomes more open and rugged as vegetation thins. You continue to Kikelewa Cave, located in a sheltered valley beneath Mawenzi. This camp is exposed and colder at night, helping your body adapt to altitude. Dinner is served early as temperatures drop significantly after sunset.

A shorter but steep climb leads into alpine terrain with stunning views of Mawenzi’s jagged peaks. Vegetation disappears as you ascend rocky slopes toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp. The camp is beautifully located in a cirque beneath Mawenzi, offering one of the most scenic settings on Kilimanjaro. The afternoon is free for rest or short acclimatization walks. This stop is important for adjusting to higher altitude and improving summit success chances. Dinner is served at camp while enjoying sunset over the volcanic landscape.

After breakfast, you cross the wide “Saddle,” a desert-like plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is dry, vast, and almost lunar, creating a surreal trekking experience. The steady hike leads to Kibo Hut, your final base before summit night. There is no natural water source here, so supplies are limited. After arrival, you rest, hydrate, and attend a detailed briefing from your guide for the summit attempt. Early dinner is served before an early sleep in preparation for the midnight ascent.
Dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut
Around 11:30 p.m., you begin the final ascent in darkness, moving slowly up steep volcanic scree. You pass Hans Meyer Cave and continue to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, strong climbers proceed to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Sunrise over glaciers and Mawenzi is a powerful reward. After brief celebration, you descend to Kibo Hut for rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for overnight stay. This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the entire climb.
Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut
After breakfast, begin a long descent through moorland and rainforest zones toward Mandara Hut and finally Marangu Gate. The air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen as you descend. At the gate, you receive your summit certificate gold for Uhuru Peak or green for Gilman’s Point. A celebration follows with your trekking team before transfer back to Moshi or Arusha. This final day marks the successful completion of your Kilimanjaro journey, combining achievement, endurance, and unforgettable mountain memories.
