This 8-day Kilimanjaro expedition follows the scenic Rongai Route, the only approach from the northern side of the mountain. Known for its dry conditions, gradual ascent, and remote wilderness experience, the route offers excellent acclimatization and high summit success rates. Trekkers pass through pine forest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The descent follows the Marangu Route through Horombo and Mandara zones. This journey combines peaceful trails, panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi, and a professionally guided climb to Africa’s highest point.

DAY 1 Arrival in Moshi

Airport pickup and transfer to Aishi Machame Hotel Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where you are warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The journey to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro offers your first scenic views of the mountain on clear days. After check-in, you relax and recover from your flight. Later, you meet your professional mountain guide for a detailed briefing covering the full Rongai Route itinerary, safety procedures, and equipment inspection. This session ensures you are fully prepared for the climb ahead. The rest of the day is free for rest and final preparation.

DAY 2 Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 8 km | 2,020 m → 2,671 m

Nalemuru Gate trailhead registration and trek through forest to Simba Camp

After breakfast, drive to Nalemuru Gate on Kilimanjaro’s northern side for registration and start of the trek. The trail begins through peaceful coniferous forest and farmland before entering the national park. The route is quiet and less crowded, offering a true wilderness experience. Wildlife such as colobus monkeys and birds may be seen along the way. The climb is gradual and steady, allowing good acclimatization. You arrive at Simba Camp in the late afternoon where tents are already prepared. Dinner is served as you rest and prepare for higher elevations.

DAY 3 Simba Camp to Kikilewa Camp

Trek through moorland zone toward Kikilewa Camp beneath Mawenzi

Today’s trek continues into the moorland zone with increasing altitude and more open landscapes. The trail becomes steeper and more physically demanding as you ascend. If weather permits, you enjoy stunning views of Kibo peak ahead. The environment changes dramatically from forest to rocky moorland with fewer trees. The hike requires steady pacing and endurance. You arrive at Kikilewa Camp in the late afternoon for rest and recovery. This campsite is exposed and cold at night, helping your body adjust to altitude before the next stage of the climb.

DAY 4 Kikilewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 5–7 km | 3,630 m → 4,330 m

Ascend rocky slopes to Mawenzi Tarn Camp and acclimatization walk

After breakfast, you begin a short but steep ascent toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp. The trail becomes increasingly rocky as vegetation disappears, revealing dramatic alpine scenery. Mawenzi peak dominates the landscape with its sharp volcanic spires. Upon arrival at Mawenzi Tarn, you rest and enjoy lunch in one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro. In the afternoon, you take an acclimatization hike gaining additional altitude before returning to camp. This activity helps your body adjust for summit success. The evening is peaceful with dinner served at camp.

DAY 5 Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Traverse alpine Saddle desert to Kibo Hut high summit base

Today you cross the vast Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, a dry and desert-like plateau with minimal vegetation. The terrain is wide, open, and surreal, offering panoramic volcanic views. The trek is steady but becomes more demanding due to altitude. You arrive at Kibo Hut, your final base before summit night. After arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare equipment for the midnight ascent. Your guide provides a detailed briefing on summit strategy and safety. Early dinner is served, and you rest early to conserve energy for the climb ahead.

DAY 6 Summit Attempt – Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Metrics: 10–15 hrs | 21 km | 4,720 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m

Midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak 5,895m and descent to Horombo Hut

Around midnight, you begin the final ascent in darkness using headlamps, climbing slowly over volcanic scree. You pass Hans Meyer Cave and continue toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, strong trekkers proceed to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Sunrise over glaciers and Mawenzi is an unforgettable reward. After celebration and photos, you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest and continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight stay. This is the most physically demanding day of the expedition, combining endurance, altitude challenge, and emotional achievement.

DAY 7 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Metrics: 5–6 hrs | 18 km | 3,720 m → 1,970 m

Rainforest descent to Marangu Gate for summit certificate and transfer to Moshi

After breakfast, you begin a steady descent through moorland and lush rainforest zones toward Mandara Hut and Marangu Gate. The air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen as you descend. At the gate, you receive your official summit certificate and celebrate your achievement with the mountain crew. This is a joyful moment marking the completion of your Kilimanjaro climb. After celebrations, you are transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for rest and relaxation.

DAY 8 Departure Day

Metrics: 1–2 hrs transfer | Moshi → Kilimanjaro Airport

Departure transfer from Aishi Machame Hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport

After breakfast at your hotel, you spend the morning relaxing and reflecting on your successful Kilimanjaro expedition. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have free time before check-out at 11:00 AM. A transfer will take you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. Optional extra nights can be arranged if needed. This marks the end of your adventure, leaving you with unforgettable memories of Africa’s highest mountain and its breathtaking landscapes.
