Travel Advice
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the tribal and village visits organized by BMC Tours & Safaris ethical?
Absolutely. Ethical cultural tourism is a core value of BMC Tours & Safaris. We work directly with village elders, community chiefs, and local cultural guides to ensure our visits are fully authorized, respectful, and mutually beneficial. A significant portion of your tour booking fee goes directly to the host communities to fund local primary schools, medical clinics, clean water infrastructure, and sustainability initiatives. We maintain strict group size limits and schedule visits to avoid disrupting the daily lives, sacred rituals, and ancient customs of the tribes.
What can we expect during a Maasai boma (village) cultural visit?
A Maasai boma visit is an energetic, immersive cultural experience. Upon arrival at the circular mud-and-thatch village, you will be warmly welcomed by Maasai warriors and women singing and performing their traditional jumping dance (Adumu). You will be invited to participate in the dance, tour inside their houses to see how they utilize space and fire, and learn about their cattle-based economy and social structure. You will also have the opportunity to view and purchase authentic, handmade beadwork directly from the women who made them, which supports their families directly.
What it is like to visit and hunt with the Hadzabe tribe at Lake Eyasi?
Visiting the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers at Lake Eyasi is like stepping back in time. As one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa, the Hadzabe do not cultivate crops or raise livestock. During your visit, you will join the men on a morning foraging hunt through the acacia bush, watching their incredible tracking skills and use of hand-crafted bows and arrows. You will also learn how they make fire using sticks, locate edible tubers and wild honey, and communicate using their unique click language. It is a highly active, fascinating, and deeply educational experience.
Is it acceptable to take photos and videos during cultural tours?
Yes, photography and videography are generally welcome, but it must always be done with respect and consent. Your BMC Tours & Safaris guide will advise you on the protocols for each specific village. Inside Maasai bomas and Hadzabe camps, your community entrance fee covers photography rights. However, it is always polite to ask individuals (or point to your camera with a smile) before taking close-up portraits. In public markets or standard villages, always ask permission first. Your guide is there to ensure comfortable and respectful photographic interactions.
Should we bring gifts, school supplies, or money for village children?
We strongly discourage handing out cash, candy, or individual items directly to children, as this can foster a culture of begging and cause dental issues. If you wish to make a meaningful contribution, BMC Tours & Safaris can arrange for you to donate school supplies (like notebooks, pens, and pencils), medical kits, or textbooks directly to the village headmaster or clinic director. This ensures that the donation is distributed fairly and benefits the entire community in an organized and productive manner.
What is the coffee and cultural tour with the Chagga tribe at Kilimanjaro?
Located on the fertile volcanic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Chagga people are famous for their advanced agricultural techniques, particularly coffee and banana farming. On this tour, you will visit a family-run organic coffee farm in Marangu or Materuni. You will participate in the entire process from picking coffee cherries, peeling, roasting, and grinding them in a giant wooden mortar while singing traditional Chagga songs. The tour concludes with enjoying a fresh cup of organic coffee, followed by exploring local waterfalls and ancient caves used during historical tribal wars.
