Full Trekking Itinerary

DAY 1 Hotel – Lemosho Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp (Rainforest Ascent Start)

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 6 km | 2,100 m → 2,810 m

Lemosho rainforest ascent to Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast and a full briefing in Arusha, you drive to Londorossi Gate for registration and final checks before entering Mount Kilimanjaro’s western slope. The trek begins in dense rainforest filled with towering trees, birds, and wildlife such as colobus monkeys. The trail is gentle and allows your body to begin natural acclimatization while porters move ahead to prepare camp. You walk at a relaxed pace through humid forest terrain with occasional clearings. Packed lunch is enjoyed on the trail as the forest gradually thickens around you. By mid-afternoon you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where tents are already set up. Dinner is served early, and you rest in the peaceful forest atmosphere.

Dinner and overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp
DAY 2 Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 2 Camp (Shira Plateau Transition Day)

Metrics: 6–8 hrs | 8 km | 2,810 m → 3,505 m

Trek onto the Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp

Today you leave the rainforest behind and ascend into heath and moorland zones, where vegetation becomes shorter and landscapes more open. The trail steadily climbs along ridges of the Shira Plateau, offering your first wide views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit when skies are clear. The terrain is longer but manageable, allowing steady acclimatization. You pass volcanic rock formations, giant groundsels, and open plains shaped by ancient eruptions. Lunch is taken on the trail while enjoying panoramic mountain scenery. In the afternoon, you arrive at Shira 2 Camp, a windy but beautiful campsite located on the vast plateau. Dinner is served hot, and the cooler high-altitude air prepares you for higher elevation ahead.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp
DAY 3 Shira 2 Camp – Moir Camp (Alpine Desert Approach Zone)

Metrics: 6–8 hrs | 9 km | 3,505 m → 4,160 m

Alpine desert trek toward Moir Camp

The trail turns east into a dramatic alpine desert environment where vegetation becomes extremely sparse and volcanic rock dominates the landscape. You hike gradually toward the Lava Tower region, an important acclimatization zone, before continuing toward Moir Camp. The air becomes noticeably thinner, and the pace slows to conserve energy. This section offers striking scenery with cliffs, valleys, and wide open views of the mountain’s western slopes. A packed lunch is taken near high-altitude rock formations. In the afternoon, you descend slightly into Moir Camp, located in a remote and quiet valley surrounded by volcanic hills. This isolation provides excellent rest conditions and supports proper altitude adaptation before continuing higher.

Dinner and overnight at Moir Camp
DAY 4 Moir Camp – Barranco Camp (Lava Tower Acclimatization Route)

Metrics: 5–7 hrs | 7 km | 4,160 m → 4,500 m → 3,950 m

Lava Tower acclimatization trek down into Barranco Camp

This important acclimatization day takes you up toward Lava Tower at around 4,500 meters before descending into Barranco Valley. The climb is slow and steady as oxygen levels decrease, making pacing essential. At Lava Tower, you stop for lunch and allow your body to adjust to high altitude exposure. After rest, you descend through changing ecosystems, passing giant senecio plants and unique alpine vegetation. The Barranco Valley is one of the most scenic areas of the entire mountain, often covered in mist with dramatic cliffs surrounding the camp. Barranco Camp sits beneath the famous Barranco Wall, offering a stunning and peaceful overnight location.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
DAY 5 Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (Barranco Wall Challenge Day)

Metrics: 3–5 hrs | 5 km | 3,950 m → 3,995 m

Scramble up Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a thrilling but non-technical scramble requiring use of hands and feet. Though challenging, it is safe and guided carefully by your team. At the top, you are rewarded with wide views of glaciers, valleys, and rugged volcanic landscapes. After the climb, the trail continues through rolling ridges and alpine desert terrain with gradual ups and downs. The pace is steady and focused on conserving energy for summit preparation. By afternoon, you reach Karanga Camp, an important acclimatization point before the final push. The rest of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing mentally for higher altitude ahead.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
DAY 6 Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (Final Base Camp Preparation)

Metrics: 3–5 hrs | 4 km | 3,995 m → 4,600 m

Ascent to Barafu Summit Base Camp

Today’s trek leads into the harsh alpine desert zone where conditions become colder, windier, and more extreme. Vegetation disappears almost completely, replaced by volcanic rock and gravel slopes. The air is thin, and every step requires slow, controlled movement. As you approach Barafu Camp, the summit glaciers become more visible, building excitement for the climb ahead. Upon arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare all equipment for the midnight summit attempt. Dinner is served early, and climbers rest briefly in freezing conditions before beginning the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp
DAY 7 Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp (Summit Day)

Metrics: 12–14 hrs | 21 km | 4,600 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m

Summiting Uhuru Peak 5,895m and descent to Mweka Camp

You begin your summit attempt just after midnight in extreme cold and darkness. The climb is slow and challenging as you ascend toward Stella Point on the crater rim. At sunrise, the sky lights up over Mawenzi peak, creating one of the most unforgettable views in Africa. From Stella Point, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent. After celebration and photos, you descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The long descent is physically demanding but oxygen-rich air makes movement easier as you approach lower elevations.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp
DAY 8 Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha (Final Descent & Completion)

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 10 km | 3,100 m → 1,640 m

Descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate

The final descent takes you through lush rainforest filled with birds, waterfalls, and dense vegetation. The trail can be slippery but scenic as you make your way to Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, you receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate and celebrate with your mountain team. After farewell, you are transferred back to Arusha, marking the end of your unforgettable Lemosho Route expedition.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 8-day Lemosho Route offers an ideal altitude ascent profile following the "climb high, sleep low" principle (such as ascending Lava Tower at 4,500m on Day 4 before sleeping at Barranco Camp 3,950m). This gradual altitude progression gives trekkers a summit success rate over 95%, while delivering breathtaking scenery across the Shira Plateau and western approach.
The trek requires good cardiovascular fitness and mental stamina. No technical climbing experience or special equipment is needed, but you will walk for 4 to 8 hours daily carrying a lightweight daypack, culminating in a 12 to 14 hour summit push to Uhuru Peak.
Our private mountain chef prepares three hot, high-carbohydrate meals daily served in a spacious mess tent. Water is collected from mountain streams, thoroughly boiled and filtered every morning and evening, ensuring you stay safely hydrated throughout the trek.
BMC Tours & Safaris guides carry pulse oximeters to conduct health checks twice daily (monitoring oxygen saturation and heart rate). Our team also carries emergency medical oxygen cylinders and first aid kits.
We provide durable 4-season mountain tents, comfortable sleeping mattresses, a communal dining tent equipped with tables and chairs, and private chemical toilet tents for exclusive use by our group.
The best times to climb are during the dry seasons: January to March (warmer temperatures and clearer skies) and June to October (cooler dry weather with excellent visibility).
