Full Trekking Itinerary

DAY 1 Airport Pick-Up – Moshi Hotel (Arrival & Preparation Day)

Welcome to Tanzania & Pre-Climb Briefing

Airport pick-up and Moshi hotel arrival briefing

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you are warmly welcomed by your mountain team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The drive introduces you to Tanzania’s landscapes. After check in, the rest of the day is dedicated to rest and recovery from travel. In the evening, your professional mountain guide conducts a detailed briefing covering the full itinerary, safety procedures, altitude awareness, and weather conditions. All trekking equipment is checked carefully to ensure you are fully prepared for the climb. This is also a good time to relax, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the adventure ahead.

Dinner and overnight at The Maridadi Hotel
DAY 2 Arusha – Londorossi Gate – Forest Camp (Rainforest Start Trek)

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 6 km | 2,100 m → 2,810 m

Lemosho trailhead rainforest trek to Forest Camp

After breakfast, drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, permits, and final briefing with park authorities. From here, continue to the Lemosho trailhead where your trek officially begins. The trail leads through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, moss, birds, and colobus monkeys. The environment is humid, green, and full of life, creating a magical start to your journey. The pace is slow and steady for proper acclimatization as porters move ahead to set up camp. Packed lunch is enjoyed on the trail while surrounded by nature sounds. By late afternoon, you arrive at Forest Camp (Big Tree Camp), where tents are ready and dinner is served in the heart of the forest.

Dinner and overnight at Forest Camp
DAY 3 Forest Camp – Shira 1 Camp (Heath Zone Ascent Day)

Metrics: 6–7 hrs | 8 km | 2,810 m → 3,505 m

Ascent into moorland zone to Shira 1 Camp

Today you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone, where vegetation becomes shorter and landscapes open widely. The trail climbs steadily through rolling hills, volcanic ridges, and scattered streams. Giant heathers and unique alpine plants dominate the scenery. As altitude increases, you begin to see clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit when skies are clear. The air becomes cooler and thinner, requiring a slower hiking rhythm. Lunch is taken along the trail with panoramic mountain views. In the afternoon, you arrive at Shira 1 Camp, a scenic high-altitude campsite where you rest and enjoy dinner under the open sky.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 1 Camp
DAY 4 Shira 1 – Shira 2 – Moir Hut (Shira Plateau Exploration Day)

Metrics: 5–7 hrs | 14 km | 3,505 m → 4,160 m

Crossing Shira Plateau to Shira 2 and Moir Hut

This long but scenic day takes you across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. The terrain is open and dramatic, with volcanic rock formations and sweeping views of Kibo peak. You hike gently across moorland landscapes, passing ancient lava flows and alpine vegetation. The walk is designed for acclimatization with gradual elevation gain. Optional short hikes around Lent Hills may be included depending on energy levels. You may stay at Shira 2 Camp or continue to Moir Hut, a quieter campsite located near rocky cliffs and valleys, ideal for rest and altitude adjustment.

Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp / Moir Hut
DAY 5 Moir Hut – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp (Acclimatization Climb Day)

Metrics: 5–6 hrs | 7 km | 4,160 m → 4,600 m → 3,950 m

Lava Tower acclimatization climb descending to Barranco Camp

Today is an important acclimatization stage as you ascend gradually toward Lava Tower, a volcanic formation at high altitude. The climb is slow and physically demanding due to reduced oxygen levels. At Lava Tower, you stop for lunch and allow your body to adjust to the altitude. This helps improve your summit success chances. After rest, you descend into Barranco Valley, one of the most beautiful areas on Kilimanjaro, filled with giant senecio plants, cliffs, and misty scenery. The contrast between harsh volcanic terrain and lush valley landscapes makes this day very memorable.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
DAY 6 Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (Barranco Wall Challenge Day)

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 5 km | 3,950 m → 3,995 m

Scrambling Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a thrilling but non-technical scramble requiring careful footing and use of hands. The climb is exciting and offers amazing views of glaciers and surrounding valleys. After reaching the top, the trail continues across ridges and gentle slopes through alpine desert terrain. The hiking pace is moderate, allowing your body to recover from previous days while continuing acclimatization. You arrive at Karanga Camp by early afternoon, where you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the final ascent stages. The environment is cold and windy, but views of the mountain are spectacular.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
DAY 7 Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (Final Base Camp Preparation)

Metrics: 3–5 hrs | 4 km | 3,995 m → 4,600 m

Ascent to Barafu Camp summit base

Today you climb into the alpine desert zone, where vegetation disappears and the terrain becomes rocky and exposed. The air is thinner and temperatures drop significantly. The trail is steady but challenging due to altitude. As you approach Barafu Camp, views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks become more dramatic. This is your final base camp before summit night. Upon arrival, you rest, hydrate, and organize gear for the midnight climb. Dinner is served early, followed by rest in preparation for the most important part of your journey.

Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp
DAY 8 Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp (Summit Day)

Metrics: 12–14 hrs | 21 km | 4,600 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m

Summiting Uhuru Peak 5,895m and descent to Mweka

You begin your summit attempt just after midnight in freezing alpine darkness, moving slowly and steadily up steep scree toward Stella Point. The climb is physically and mentally demanding as oxygen levels drop and temperatures remain extremely low. Reaching Stella Point at sunrise is a powerful reward, with golden light spreading across the crater rim. From here, you continue along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, for a brief celebration, photos, and unforgettable views above the clouds. After summit success, you descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down through changing landscapes into the rainforest zone, arriving at Mweka Camp by evening.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp
DAY 9 Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha (Final Descent & Certificate Day)

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 10 km | 3,100 m → 1,640 m

Rainforest descent to Mweka Gate and certificate presentation

The final descent leads you through dense rainforest filled with birds, flowing streams, and rich green vegetation. The trail is often muddy and slippery but offers a peaceful and reflective walk after the summit achievement. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen, making each step easier compared to the summit day. You gradually approach Mweka Gate, where the forest opens into the park exit area. Upon arrival, you receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate and celebrate your successful climb with your mountain crew. After farewells and group photos, you are transferred back to Arusha or Moshi, marking the end of your unforgettable journey to the Roof of Africa.
