Full Trekking Itinerary

DAY 1 Arrival in Arusha

Metrics: 1–2 hrs transfer | Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha

Airport pickup and transfer to Airport Planet Lodge

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our team and transferred to your lodge in Arusha. After check-in, relax and recover from your international journey while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Later in the day, meet your professional mountain guide for a comprehensive climb briefing covering route details, altitude awareness, safety procedures, equipment checks, and summit preparation. This session provides an opportunity to ask questions and ensure all necessary gear is ready for the adventure ahead. The remainder of the evening is free for relaxation before dinner and overnight stay as you prepare to begin your Kilimanjaro expedition the following morning.

Dinner and overnight at Airport Planet Lodge
DAY 2 Arusha – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

Metrics: 5–7 hrs | 11 km | 1,800 m → 3,000 m

Machame Gate registration and rainforest climb start

After breakfast, depart Arusha and drive to Machame Gate for registration and final preparations. Once park formalities are completed, begin your trek through Kilimanjaro's lush rainforest zone. Towering trees, hanging vines, colorful birds, and playful colobus monkeys make this section particularly enjoyable. The trail climbs gradually through dense vegetation, offering a true wilderness experience. Your experienced guides maintain a steady pace while introducing you to the mountain's unique ecosystem. As you gain altitude, the forest becomes quieter and cooler. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon where tents are already prepared by your support team. Enjoy a freshly prepared dinner and settle in for your first night on Africa's highest mountain.

Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp
DAY 3 Machame Camp – Shira Camp

Metrics: 4–6 hrs | 5 km | 3,000 m → 3,840 m

Moorland ridge traverse to Shira Plateau

Today's trek leaves the rainforest behind and enters the spectacular moorland zone. The trail ascends along rocky ridges surrounded by giant heathers and volcanic formations. As the vegetation gradually thins, magnificent views begin to open across the surrounding landscape. On clear days, Mount Meru rises dramatically on the horizon while Kibo Peak dominates the skyline ahead. The route crosses several streams and rocky sections before reaching the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. The afternoon provides valuable acclimatization time as you adjust to the higher altitude. Relax at camp while enjoying panoramic views and watching the changing mountain colors as sunset approaches.

Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp
DAY 4 Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Metrics: 6–8 hrs | 10 km | 3,840 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m

Lava Tower high altitude acclimatization to Barranco Camp

This important acclimatization day follows the mountaineering principle of climbing high and sleeping low. The route gradually ascends across alpine desert terrain toward the impressive Lava Tower, a towering volcanic rock formation standing at over 4,600 meters. Reaching this altitude helps your body adapt to the thinner air before descending to a lower sleeping elevation. The scenery changes dramatically throughout the day, featuring rocky landscapes, sparse vegetation, and breathtaking mountain views. After lunch near Lava Tower, descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley where giant groundsels and unique alpine plants thrive. Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic and photographed campsites.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
DAY 5 Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Metrics: 4–5 hrs | 5 km | 3,960 m → 4,035 m

Barranco Wall climb toward Karanga Camp

The day begins with the exciting ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. Although steep in places, the climb is non-technical and rewards hikers with spectacular views across valleys, glaciers, and distant peaks. After reaching the top, the route continues across rolling ridges and alpine terrain with several short ascents and descents. This shorter trekking day is strategically designed to improve acclimatization while conserving energy for the higher elevations ahead. The landscape remains dramatic and rugged, providing excellent opportunities for photography. Arrive at Karanga Camp during the afternoon and enjoy time to rest, hydrate, and participate in an optional acclimatization walk before dinner.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
DAY 6 Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 4 km | 4,035 m → 4,640 m

Ascent to Barafu base camp

Today's trek leads toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. The route crosses a barren alpine desert landscape where vegetation becomes scarce and temperatures continue to drop. Despite the relatively short distance, the altitude makes the climb more demanding. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, settle into your tents and enjoy an early lunch. The remainder of the afternoon is dedicated to rest, hydration, and preparation for summit night. Your guides will conduct a final briefing and ensure everyone is ready for the midnight departure. An early dinner allows for several hours of rest before the ultimate challenge begins.

Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp
DAY 7 Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Metrics: 12–15 hrs | 15 km | 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m

Uhuru Peak 5,895m summit victory

Shortly after midnight, begin your summit attempt beneath a sky filled with stars. Guided by headlamps, ascend slowly toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most physically and mentally demanding stage of the climb, requiring determination and patience. As dawn breaks, spectacular views emerge across glaciers, ice fields, and distant mountain ranges. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters, where unforgettable photographs and celebrations await. After reaching the summit, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal before continuing down through changing ecological zones to Mweka Camp. This remarkable achievement becomes the highlight of your entire Tanzanian adventure.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp
DAY 8 Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha

Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 10 km | 3,100 m → 1,640 m

Mweka Gate certificate presentation and transfer

After your final mountain breakfast, begin the descent through Kilimanjaro's lush rainforest zone. The trail is often damp and rich with birdlife, colorful vegetation, and occasional monkey sightings. As oxygen levels increase and temperatures become warmer, the descent feels considerably easier than previous trekking days. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, complete park exit formalities and receive your official summit certificate recognizing your achievement. Your driver will then transfer you back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, bringing your incredible mountain adventure to a successful conclusion.
