The 8-Day Northern Circuit Route is one of the most scenic and successful routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the western side via Lemosho, this route circles the remote northern slopes of the mountain, offering breathtaking views, fewer crowds, and outstanding acclimatization opportunities. Trekkers experience diverse ecological zones ranging from rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and arctic summit landscapes. Metrics: 3–4 hrs | 7 km | 2,100 m → 2,750 m
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with registration at Lemosho Gate before a short transfer to the trailhead. The trek starts through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, hanging moss, colorful birds, and occasional sightings of black-and-white colobus monkeys. The trail climbs gradually through one of the mountain's most beautiful ecosystems, providing a peaceful introduction to the climb. Your guides will share information about the flora and fauna found within Kilimanjaro National Park while maintaining a comfortable pace. Upon arrival at Mti Mkubwa Camp, your mountain crew will have prepared camp and a hot meal. Enjoy your first evening on the mountain surrounded by rainforest sounds and fresh mountain air.

After breakfast, continue ascending through the final sections of rainforest before entering the moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically as giant heathers and volcanic formations begin to dominate the scenery. The trail follows scenic ridges with excellent views of surrounding valleys and distant mountain peaks. As you gain elevation, the vast Shira Plateau gradually comes into view, showcasing one of Kilimanjaro's most spectacular landscapes. The cooler temperatures and open terrain offer a completely different trekking experience from the forest below. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon and enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak while resting and acclimatizing.

Today's shorter trek allows valuable acclimatization while crossing the expansive Shira Plateau. The terrain is relatively gentle, making it an enjoyable hiking day with plenty of opportunities to admire the surrounding volcanic landscapes. The plateau offers stunning panoramic views of Kibo Peak, distant valleys, and neighboring mountain ranges. Along the way, you may encounter unique alpine vegetation adapted to the high-altitude environment. The gradual elevation gain helps your body adjust naturally while conserving energy for the days ahead. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp early enough to enjoy lunch, relax, and explore the surrounding area before dinner. The spectacular sunset over the plateau provides excellent photography opportunities.

Today follows the important acclimatization strategy of climbing high and sleeping low. The trail gradually ascends toward the famous Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation standing at approximately 4,600 meters. Reaching this altitude helps your body adapt to thinner air before descending to a lower sleeping elevation. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you enter the alpine desert zone, characterized by rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. After lunch near Lava Tower, descend slightly toward the quieter Moir Hut area. Surrounded by volcanic rock formations and open mountain scenery, Moir Hut offers a peaceful camping experience away from the more crowded southern routes.

Leaving Moir Hut, the trail turns northward and enters the remote Northern Circuit section of Kilimanjaro. This area is significantly less crowded, providing a true wilderness experience. The route traverses open alpine landscapes with magnificent views stretching across the plains of Kenya. The terrain consists of rolling ridges and wide valleys, offering a unique perspective rarely seen by climbers on other routes. Wildlife sightings are occasionally possible in the lower surrounding areas. Throughout the day, enjoy uninterrupted views of Kilimanjaro's northern slopes while benefiting from excellent acclimatization. Arrive at Buffalo Camp in the afternoon and relax while taking in the peaceful mountain environment.

Today's trek continues across the northern slopes beneath the towering summit cone of Kibo. The route offers exceptional views of remote alpine landscapes and distant plains stretching toward Kenya. With fewer climbers on this section of the mountain, the atmosphere remains peaceful and secluded. The gradual terrain allows steady progress while preserving energy for the summit attempt ahead. As you approach Third Cave Camp, Kibo Peak appears increasingly impressive and serves as a reminder of the challenge that awaits. Arrive at camp in the afternoon and spend time resting, hydrating, and preparing mentally for the higher elevations ahead.

After an early ascent to School Hut, final summit preparations begin before a brief rest. Around midnight, your summit push starts under the stars as you ascend steadily toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim. This demanding section requires determination and patience as you navigate steep scree slopes in freezing temperatures. Upon reaching the rim, continue across the crater edge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Celebrate your achievement with photographs and breathtaking views over glaciers and surrounding landscapes. After spending time at the summit, begin the long descent through multiple ecological zones before reaching Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest and overnight stay.

Following breakfast, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro's lush rainforest. The warmer temperatures and oxygen-rich air make for a comfortable walk as you gradually leave the mountain behind. The trail passes through beautiful forest scenery filled with birds, butterflies, and tropical vegetation. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, complete park formalities and receive your official summit certificate recognizing your successful climb. Your driver will then transfer you back to Moshi where a hot shower, comfortable accommodation, and celebration await.
