After breakfast, drive to Umbwe Gate for registration before beginning your trek. The trail immediately enters dense montane rainforest filled with towering trees, ferns, and rich wildlife. The ascent is steep and continuous, giving the Umbwe Route its reputation as Kilimanjaro’s most demanding trail. The forest environment provides shade and opportunities to spot colobus monkeys and colorful bird species. By late afternoon, arrive at Umbwe Camp, surrounded by lush vegetation. Enjoy dinner prepared by the mountain crew before settling into your tent for the night.

Today's trek leaves the rainforest behind and enters the moorland zone, where giant heathers and unique alpine vegetation dominate the landscape. The trail follows exposed ridges with magnificent views across valleys and surrounding mountains. As altitude increases, temperatures become cooler and the scenery more dramatic. You will gradually merge with the Machame Route before reaching Barranco Camp. Located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, this camp is widely regarded as one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic campsites. The day also provides important acclimatization as your body adapts to the higher elevation.
Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
Begin the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall, an exciting non-technical scramble that offers some of the most spectacular views on Kilimanjaro. After reaching the top, the trail traverses ridges and valleys with stunning views of glaciers, cliffs, and distant peaks. Continue through rugged alpine terrain toward Karanga Camp. This shorter trekking day is strategically designed to improve acclimatization while conserving energy for the higher elevations ahead. Arrive at camp in time for lunch and enjoy a relaxing afternoon surrounded by the mountain’s dramatic scenery.
Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
After breakfast, continue ascending toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The trail passes through barren alpine desert terrain characterized by rocky slopes and expansive mountain views. As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic and vegetation disappears almost completely. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, enjoy lunch and spend the remainder of the afternoon resting and preparing for summit night. Your guide will conduct a detailed briefing and ensure all equipment is ready. An early dinner is served before several hours of rest ahead of the midnight ascent.

Shortly after midnight, begin the challenging summit ascent beneath a sky filled with stars. The trail climbs steadily over volcanic scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. As dawn breaks, continue along the summit ridge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Celebrate your achievement, take photographs, and enjoy breathtaking views of glaciers and the surrounding landscape. After a brief stay at the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for rest and refreshments before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The lower altitude provides welcome relief and a comfortable overnight stay.
Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp
After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail winds through dense vegetation where birds and monkeys are often spotted. Upon reaching the gate, complete park formalities and receive your summit certificate as recognition of your accomplishment. Bid farewell to your mountain crew before transferring back to Arusha.
