This 10-day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route expedition is one of the most scenic and least crowded paths to the Roof of Africa. The journey begins in lush rainforest and continues through heath, moorland, alpine desert, and icy summit zones. With extra acclimatization time, this route offers a very high summit success rate. Ideal for adventurous trekkers, it combines wilderness experience, wildlife sightings, and professional mountain support for a safe and unforgettable ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are warmly welcomed by your driver guide and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The scenic drive introduces you to Tanzania’s landscapes with views of Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru depending on weather. After check-in, the rest of the day is for relaxation and recovery from travel. In the evening, your head guide conducts a detailed briefing covering route overview, safety rules, weather expectations, and equipment checks. You will also have time to review your climbing gear and rent any missing equipment. The hotel offers a comfortable environment with optional swimming and rest before the adventure begins.

After breakfast, drive through rural landscapes to Londorossi Gate for registration and final permit processing. From here, continue by 4WD to Lemosho Glades, where the trek begins. The trail leads through untouched rainforest filled with giant trees, birds, and possible wildlife sightings including monkeys. The hiking pace is slow and steady to support acclimatization. Porters move ahead to set up camp while you enjoy a peaceful walk through dense vegetation. Packed lunch is taken on the trail before arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) in the afternoon. The evening is spent resting and enjoying your first night in the wilderness.

Today’s trek begins with breakfast before ascending gradually out of the rainforest into heath and moorland zones. The vegetation becomes shorter and more open, revealing wide views of ridges and volcanic formations. You cross streams and climb steadily toward Shira Ridge, where the landscape opens dramatically. From here, you descend slightly to reach Shira 1 Camp, located on the edge of the vast Shira Plateau. The views of Mount Kilimanjaro begin to emerge clearly when skies are open. This is an important acclimatization stage, allowing your body to adjust to increasing altitude while enjoying dramatic scenery.
Dinner and overnight at Shira 1 Camp
After a relaxed morning with warm water and breakfast, you continue a gentle hike across the Shira Plateau. This wide volcanic plateau offers some of the most spectacular views on the mountain. The terrain is open, with moorland vegetation and distant views of Kibo peak. The short hiking distance makes this an excellent acclimatization day, allowing optional short walks around the plateau for better altitude adjustment. You arrive early at Shira 2 Camp, situated near a stream, where you rest for the remainder of the day and enjoy the peaceful high-altitude environment.
Dinner and overnight at Shira 2 Camp
The trail ascends into alpine desert terrain, passing volcanic formations and rocky ridges toward Lava Tower, an important acclimatization point. The climb is slow due to thinning air, but essential for summit preparation. After lunch at high altitude, you descend into Barranco Valley, one of the most beautiful sections of Kilimanjaro. Giant senecio plants and dramatic cliffs surround the camp area, creating a unique landscape. Barranco Camp sits beneath the famous Barranco Wall, offering stunning views and a cooler evening climate.
Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a steep but non-technical scramble requiring hands and careful footing. Although challenging, it is safe and rewarding, offering panoramic views at the top. After the climb, the trail continues through rolling alpine terrain and valleys with gradual ascents and descents. This is a shorter day designed for recovery and acclimatization. You arrive at Karanga Camp by early afternoon, where you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the final ascent stages ahead.
Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you continue trekking into the alpine desert zone where vegetation disappears and conditions become harsher. The trail is rocky, exposed, and increasingly cold as you gain elevation. You reach the junction connecting the Mweka route before continuing to Barafu Camp. This is your final base camp before summit night. Upon arrival, you rest, hydrate, and prepare equipment for the midnight ascent. Dinner is served early, followed by a short rest before the summit attempt.
Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp
At midnight, you begin your summit ascent in freezing conditions toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb is slow and mentally demanding but rewarding at sunrise with breathtaking views. From Stella Point, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, for celebration and photos. After a short stay, you descend back to Barafu Camp before continuing down to Mweka Camp. This is the most challenging but most memorable day of the entire expedition.
Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest filled with birds, streams, and thick vegetation. The trail can be muddy but scenic as you approach Mweka Gate. At the gate, you receive your summit certificate gold for Uhuru Peak and green for Stella Point climbers. You then transfer to Springlands Hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, lunch, and well-earned rest. This is also where climbers celebrate their achievement with the mountain team before departure arrangements.
