Embark on an unforgettable adventure to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro via the scenic Lemosho Route, one of the most beautiful and less crowded approaches to the Roof of Africa. This 7-day trekking expedition takes you through rainforest, volcanic plateaus, alpine deserts, and icy summit zones. Designed for moderately fit adventurers, it offers excellent acclimatization and high summit success rates. Enjoy expert guides, full camping support, and breathtaking panoramic landscapes throughout your journey to Uhuru Peak.
Your journey begins in Arusha with a detailed mountain briefing before driving to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration, begin trekking through dense Afromontane rainforest filled with ancient trees, tropical birds, and playful colobus monkeys. The trail is gentle and ideal for initial acclimatization while porters move ahead to set up camp. Enjoy packed lunch along the way as the forest surrounds you with fresh mountain air. Arrive at Forest Camp in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay under canvas tents deep in the wilderness.
Accommodation: Forest Camp (Budget Mountain camping)
Continue ascending through changing ecological zones, leaving the rainforest behind as you enter heath and moorland landscapes. Giant groundsels and volcanic rock formations dominate the terrain as the vast Shira Plateau opens up with dramatic views of Kibo peak. The air becomes thinner and cooler as you steadily gain altitude. Lunch is taken on the trail surrounded by open wilderness scenery. Arrive at Moir Hut, a quiet and remote acclimatization site with fewer climbers, offering peaceful rest and stunning evening views of the mountain slopes.
Accommodation: Moir Hut (Mountain hut / camping)
Today you enter the alpine desert zone where vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape turns dramatic and rocky. Trek steadily toward Lava Tower, an important acclimatization point where lunch is served at high altitude. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to reduced oxygen levels. After resting, descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, home to giant senecio plants and surreal scenery. The contrast between harsh volcanic terrain and lush valley vegetation makes this one of the most scenic days on the route.
Accommodation: Barranco Camp (Budget mountain camping)
Start the day with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a thrilling non-technical scramble requiring both hands and feet. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and rugged volcanic formations. Continue trekking through ridges, valleys, and rolling alpine terrain with gradual ups and downs. This stage is both physically engaging and visually rewarding. Arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon, an important acclimatization stop that offers breathtaking sunset views and helps prepare your body for the higher altitude ahead.
Accommodation: Karanga Camp (Budget Mountain camping)
Today you leave Karanga Camp and steadily ascend into the stark alpine desert zone, where the landscape becomes increasingly dry, rocky, and exposed. Vegetation disappears almost completely, replaced by volcanic gravel and wide-open slopes shaped by wind and time. As altitude increases, oxygen levels drop noticeably, making the pace slower and more deliberate. The trail is demanding but rewarding, with occasional views back across the Karanga Valley and toward the summit glaciers ahead. Arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon, the final base camp before your summit attempt. Here you will rest, hydrate, and prepare equipment for the midnight climb. Dinner is served early to allow a short rest before the summit push begins in the cold night conditions.
Accommodation: Barafu Camp (High-altitude budget camping)
Begin your summit attempt just before midnight under freezing conditions and strong winds. Ascend slowly toward Stella Point, reaching the crater rim at sunrise with breathtaking views over Mawenzi peak. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, for celebration and photography. After a short rest, descend carefully to Barafu Camp and continue further down into the rainforest zone at Mweka Camp. This long and demanding day is the highlight of your entire expedition.
Accommodation: Mweka Camp (Budget Mountain camping)
Descend through lush rainforest trails filled with birds, waterfalls, and thick vegetation toward Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate and celebrate your successful climb with your mountain team. After farewell, transfer back to Arusha where your unforgettable adventure concludes. This marks the completion of your journey to the Roof of Africa.
