Assemble at the lodge. Meet your specialized guide and tracker, learn safety rules, and board the spotlight-rigged vehicle.
08:00 PM Nocturnal Search
Set off into the darkness. Your tracker uses a specialized filtered spotlight to search for nocturnal eye reflections in the bush.
10:00 PM Return to Camp

Are night game drives permitted in all national parks across Tanzania?
No, night game drives are strictly prohibited in the vast majority of Tanzania’s public national parks to protect wildlife and ensure safety. However, the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has authorized night game drives in specific parks under strict regulations. These include Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park, where you must be accompanied by an armed park ranger. Outside of public parks, night game drives are highly popular and regularly conducted on private wildlife concessions and ranches bordering the Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystems.
What kind of wildlife can we expect to see during a night game drive?
Night game drives reveal a completely different set of animals compared to day tours. You can expect to spot active predators like lions and leopards starting their nocturnal hunts, along with smaller carnivores like servals, caracals, civets, and genets. It is also the best opportunity to see rare nocturnal species like bushbabies jumping through tree branches, porcupines, aardvarks, and honey badgers. You will also spot sleeping herd animals and hear the night calls of owls, nightjars, and calling hyenas.
Do the spotlights used during night game drives disturb the animals?
BMC Tours & Safaris takes ethical wildlife viewing very seriously. We use specialized, low-intensity spotlights, often fitted with red or amber filters, which are less intrusive to nocturnal eyes and do not disrupt the animals' natural behaviors. Our experienced trackers and guides avoid pointing the beam directly into the eyes of animals (especially prey species like antelopes, as this can temporarily blind them and make them easy targets for predators). The spotlights are swept across the vegetation to spot eye reflections and are then kept offset when viewing animals.
Is it safe to go on a night game drive in an open safari vehicle?
Yes, it is extremely safe. Nocturnal game drives are conducted by our most experienced professional guides and trackers, accompanied by an armed park ranger in national parks. The open-sided 4x4 vehicles allow for excellent 360-degree viewing and spotlighting, but they are built strong to ensure passenger safety. Animals in these areas are well-habituated to the shape and sound of vehicles and do not perceive them as prey or threat. Guests are briefed on safety guidelines, which include remaining seated at all times, keeping voices down, and not shining any personal flashlights.
How should we dress and prepare for a night game drive safari?
The East African savanna cools down rapidly once the sun sets, and driving in an open safari vehicle can feel very cold. We highly recommend dressing in warm layers. Essential items include a windproof jacket, a warm fleece or sweater, long trousers, closed-toed shoes, and optionally a scarf and beanie. We also suggest applying insect repellent before departing. Since taking photos in low light requires steady hands, a camera with good high-ISO performance and a fast lens is recommended, though flash photography is generally discouraged to protect wildlife.
What is the typical start time and duration of a night game drive?
A standard night game drive starts after an early dinner, typically departing from your safari lodge or luxury tented camp around 7:30 PM or 8:00 PM. The drive lasts for approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, returning to camp between 10:00 PM and 10:30 PM. This timing is selected because nocturnal predators and smaller mammals are most active during these early evening hours. Upon return to camp, guests can enjoy a warm beverage by the campfire and share stories of their nocturnal sightings under the clear African star-filled sky.
