UNESCO Caldera Floor Safari, Hippo Pools & Ngoitokitok Springs Picnic

Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife Floor

An early breakfast prepares you for the highlight of your trip: the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, creating a natural enclosure for an astounding density of wildlife. As you drive onto the crater floor, you enter a world where lions stalk zebras on open plains, hippos wallow in freshwater pools, and the endangered black rhino grazes in the distance.

Your guide will navigate you through this "Garden of Eden," stopping for a memorable picnic lunch near the hippo pool at the Ngoitokitok Springs. Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions. While spotting them is not guaranteed on every drive, they are frequently seen dozing in the branches of acacia trees during the warm hours of the day.
The drive from Arusha to Lake Manyara is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours on well-paved roads, offering scenic views of agricultural towns and the Rift Valley escarpment.
Yes, a 2-day safari is perfect for combining Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Because both parks are relatively close to Arusha, you spend less time driving and more time on game drives.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera. It acts as a sanctuary for over 25,000 large mammals, including all of the Big Five, providing one of the best safari experiences in the world.
We recommend packing light, comfortable clothing in neutral colors, a warm jacket for cool mornings at the Ngorongoro Crater rim, sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, binoculars, and a camera with extra batteries.
